moonshine jug

A moonshine jug is a large ceramic or glass container traditionally used for storing and transporting illegally distilled whiskey.

The classic form is a brown or tan stoneware jug with a small handle and narrow mouth, often depicted in American folk imagery of Appalachian bootleggers: He pulled a moonshine jug from under the porch.

The vessel has become an icon of rural Southern culture and Prohibition-era defiance.
