mill race
Waterwheel's driving current
A mill race is the channel that carries water to or from a water mill's wheel.
The race leading water toward the wheel is the headrace; the one carrying it away is the tailrace.
Mill races were carefully engineered to control water flow and maximize the power available to turn the wheel.
Many survive as landscape features long after the mills themselves have disappeared.
