mead-hall

Norse feasting building

A mead-hall was a large building in early medieval Germanic and Scandinavian cultures where a lord hosted his warriors for feasting, drinking, and sleeping.

Mead—fermented honey—was the drink of choice.

The hall served as the social and political center of a community, where oaths were sworn, gifts distributed, and stories told.

Beowulf's Heorot is the most famous literary example.
