Grendel

Anglo-Saxon nightmare

Grendel is a monster in the Old English epic *Beowulf*, a creature who terrorizes the Danish mead-hall Heorot until the hero Beowulf tears off his arm.

Grendel represents primal violence and chaos—described as descended from Cain, exiled from human fellowship.

The name sometimes appears in allusions to lurking threats or embodied evil: Every organization has its Grendel.
