voice mail

Recorded telephone messages

Voice mail is a system for recording and storing telephone messages when a call goes unanswered.

The caller hears a greeting and leaves a message; the recipient retrieves it later.

Before mobile phones, voice mail was typically provided by phone companies or office systems.

Now it's built into most phones: I'll check my voice mail.

Also spelled voicemail.
