magus

Persian priestly practitioner

A magus is a priest or practitioner of magic, particularly one associated with ancient Persia or Zoroastrianism.

The plural is magi, familiar from the biblical account of wise men who visited the infant Jesus bearing gifts.

In broader use, magus describes any powerful sorcerer or wizard, often one with esoteric knowledge: The old magus consulted his ancient texts before attempting the ritual.

The word carries connotations of mystery, wisdom, and supernatural power.
