magic lanterns

Early image projectors

Magic lanterns is the plural of magic lantern, an early projection device that used candlelight or oil lamps to cast images painted on glass slides onto a wall or screen.

Popular from the 17th through early 20th centuries for entertainment and education, magic lanterns were the technological ancestors of modern slide projectors and cinema: The lecturer illustrated his talk with magic lantern slides.
