wildcat strike
Spontaneous labor stoppage
A wildcat strike is a work stoppage organized by workers without official authorization from their union leadership.
Unlike sanctioned strikes, wildcat strikes erupt spontaneously in response to immediate grievances—unsafe conditions, sudden policy changes, or management actions workers find intolerable.
Workers launched a wildcat strike after three colleagues were fired without cause.
The term suggests something untamed and unpredictable, outside institutional control.
