fob

Keychain decorative pendant

A fob is a small ornament or charm attached to a watch chain or keychain, or the short chain or ribbon itself.

The word now commonly refers to a small electronic device that controls access—a key fob unlocks a car remotely, a security fob grants building entry.

To fob someone off is to dismiss them with evasions or excuses, or to pass off something inferior as acceptable: He tried to fob off the broken watch as an antique. (Capitalized FOB is an acronym.)
