burbot

Cold lake dweller

A burbot is a freshwater fish related to the cod, with an elongated body and a single barbel on its chin.

Found in cold rivers and lakes across northern regions, it's the only cod family member living entirely in fresh water.

Also called eelpout or lingcod in some areas: We caught a burbot through the ice.
