ugly
Hard to behold
Ugly describes what is unpleasant to look at—the opposite of beautiful or attractive.
The word extends beyond appearance to anything disagreeable: an ugly mood, an ugly rumor, an ugly scene.
An ugly duckling is someone initially unappealing who becomes attractive later.
Things can turn ugly when situations become hostile or dangerous: The protest turned ugly when police arrived.
