liminality
Neither here nor there
Liminality is the quality of being at a threshold or in-between state—neither fully one thing nor another.
The term comes from anthropology, where it describes the disorienting middle phase of rituals when participants have left their old status but haven't yet assumed their new one.
The concept has spread to describe any ambiguous transitional period: the liminality of adolescence, the liminality of airport terminals.
Liminal spaces—empty hallways, abandoned malls—have become an internet aesthetic built around this unsettling betweenness.
