walkabout
Australian rite passage
Walkabout originally refers to a journey Australian Aboriginal people take through the bush, often for spiritual purposes or to live in traditional ways.
The term has spread to mean any extended wandering or period of travel, especially one taken to clear the mind or escape routine: He went on a walkabout after quitting his job.
In British usage, a walkabout is also when a public figure walks among crowds to greet them informally: The princess did a walkabout through the market square.
