rite of passage
Coming-of-age tradition
A rite of passage is a ceremony or experience marking a transition from one stage of life to another—birth, puberty, marriage, death.
The term extends beyond formal rituals to any significant experience that transforms someone: Getting my driver's license felt like a rite of passage.
First jobs, graduations, and heartbreaks all qualify as informal rites of passage.
