latitudes
Lines measuring north-south
Latitudes are imaginary horizontal lines circling the Earth parallel to the equator, measuring distance north or south in degrees.
The equator is zero degrees; the poles are ninety.
Beyond geography, latitude means freedom or room to act: The job gives me considerable latitude in how I spend my time.
In the plural, latitudes often refers to regions: northern latitudes, tropical latitudes.
