landrush

Race for acreage

A landrush is a sudden rush to claim available land, historically referring to government-organized events where settlers raced to stake claims on newly opened territory.

The term now commonly describes any competitive scramble for limited resources released simultaneously: the domain name landrush of the early internet, a landrush for beachfront property.

Also spelled land rush.
