cochineal

Bug-derived red

Cochineal is a red dye derived from the dried bodies of scale insects native to Mexico and Central America.

The pigment, also called carmine, has been used for centuries to color textiles, cosmetics, and food.

The yogurt gets its pink color from cochineal extract.

Despite being an insect product, cochineal is considered a natural alternative to synthetic red dyes.
