knight errant

Roving medieval hero

A knight errant is a medieval knight who wandered in search of adventures—rescuing maidens, slaying dragons, righting wrongs.

The term comes from errant meaning wandering or roving.

By extension, a knight errant is anyone who pursues noble causes with idealistic, perhaps quixotic determination: He fancied himself a knight errant, championing lost causes.
