kana
Japanese phonetic script
Kana refers to the two Japanese syllabic writing systems: hiragana and katakana.
Unlike kanji, which are logographic characters borrowed from Chinese, kana characters represent sounds rather than meanings.
Hiragana is used for native Japanese words and grammatical elements, while katakana is typically used for foreign loanwords and emphasis.
She learned kana before tackling kanji.
Together with kanji, kana form the basis of written Japanese.
