romaji

Alphabetized Japanese sounds

Romaji is the representation of Japanese words using the Latin alphabet.

It allows non-Japanese readers to pronounce Japanese terms without learning the native writing systems: The word "Tokyo" is romaji for 東京.

Romaji appears in dictionaries, textbooks, and anywhere Japanese needs to be accessible to Western readers.
