Japanese script

Hiragana and katakana

Japanese script refers to the writing system used for the Japanese language, which combines three distinct character sets: hiragana and katakana (syllabaries of about 50 characters each) and kanji (characters borrowed from Chinese).

The three scripts are used together, with kanji carrying most semantic content, hiragana handling grammatical elements, and katakana typically reserved for foreign loanwords: Learning Japanese script takes years of practice.
