reuptake

Neurotransmitter retrieval process

Reuptake is the process by which a nerve cell reabsorbs a neurotransmitter after it has been released into the synapse.

This recycling mechanism terminates the chemical signal between neurons.

The term appears most often in discussions of antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which work by blocking this process to keep more serotonin available in the brain.

The medication prevents reuptake of dopamine.
