enabler

Codependent support person

An enabler is someone who makes something possible, often with the connotation of facilitating harmful behavior.

In psychology and addiction contexts, an enabler shields someone from the consequences of destructive actions—covering for an alcoholic spouse, lending money to a gambler: His mother was his chief enabler, bailing him out every time.

The term can also be neutral, describing anyone who helps others accomplish goals: a great enabler of young talent.
