operon
Prokaryotic transcription unit
An operon is a cluster of genes in bacteria that function as a single unit, controlled by one regulatory switch.
The genes in an operon are transcribed together and typically code for proteins involved in the same metabolic pathway: The lac operon controls lactose metabolism in E. coli.
The concept, developed by Jacob and Monod, was foundational to understanding gene regulation.
