pitocin

Synthetic contraction hormone

Pitocin is a brand name for synthetic oxytocin, a hormone used to induce or strengthen labor contractions during childbirth.

It's administered intravenously in hospitals when labor stalls or needs to be started: They put her on Pitocin to speed things along.

The drug can also help control postpartum bleeding.
