induced coma
Deliberate medical sleep
An induced coma is a state of deep unconsciousness deliberately caused by doctors using controlled doses of anesthetic drugs.
Medical teams induce comas to protect the brain after severe injury, during major surgery, or when a patient's condition requires the body to rest completely: He was placed in an induced coma after the car accident.
Unlike natural comas, induced comas can be reversed by withdrawing the medication.
