hydrometers

Fluid density gauges

Hydrometers are instruments that measure the density or specific gravity of liquids.

A typical hydrometer is a sealed glass tube with a weighted bulb that floats upright in liquid—the deeper it sinks, the less dense the fluid.

Hydrometers test alcohol content in brewing, battery acid strength, or salinity in aquariums: The brewer checked the hydrometer to calculate the beer's alcohol percentage.
