refractometer

Light-bending gauge

A refractometer is an instrument that measures how much light bends when passing through a substance.

Since the degree of bending depends on what's dissolved in a liquid, refractometers are used to measure concentrations—sugar content in wine, salinity in seawater, protein in blood.

The winemaker checked the grapes with a refractometer to gauge ripeness.
