hydatid

Tapeworm larval sac

A hydatid is a cyst containing watery fluid, particularly one formed by the larval stage of a tapeworm in host tissues.

Hydatid cysts develop when tapeworm eggs are ingested and larvae migrate to organs like the liver or lungs, forming fluid-filled sacs that can grow large enough to cause serious damage: The scan revealed a hydatid cyst in her liver.

Hydatid disease affects both humans and livestock, especially in regions where dogs and sheep live in close proximity.
