anaphylaxis
Severe allergy attack
Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs rapidly after exposure to a triggering substance—common culprits include bee stings, peanuts, shellfish, and certain medications.
The immune system overreacts catastrophically, causing symptoms like throat swelling, difficulty breathing, plummeting blood pressure, and hives.
Without immediate treatment, typically an epinephrine injection, anaphylaxis can be fatal within minutes: She carries an EpiPen because of her risk of anaphylaxis.
