pawnbroker

Loans against valuables

A pawnbroker is a person who lends money in exchange for personal property held as security.

If the borrower repays the loan plus interest within a set period, they reclaim their item; if not, the pawnbroker sells it.

Pawnbrokers operate pawnshops, often recognizable by the traditional symbol of three golden balls: He took his grandfather's watch to the pawnbroker.
