raddle
Red marking pigment
Raddle has two distinct threads.
One is a red pigment, especially the ochre used to mark sheep—a ram fitted with a raddle leaves colored marks on ewes he has mounted, telling the farmer which have been bred.
To raddle in this sense is to mark with such pigment.
The other raddle means to weave or intertwine flexible rods, as in making a hurdle or fence.
The adjective raddled, meaning worn or haggard, likely comes from a variant of "addled": her raddled face showed years of hard living.
