grizzly
North American predator
A grizzly is a large North American brown bear, distinguished by the grizzled (gray-tipped) fur that gives it its name.
Grizzlies are powerful and potentially dangerous, making them icons of wilderness and subjects of both fear and conservation efforts: We hung our food to keep it away from grizzlies.
As an adjective, grizzly means gray or partly gray, though grizzled is more common in that sense.
