gibbous moon

More than half-lit

A gibbous moon is more than half illuminated but not yet full—the phase between half moon and full moon.

The term applies to both waxing gibbous (growing toward full) and waning gibbous (shrinking after full).

Gibbous comes from a Latin word meaning humpbacked, describing the moon's bulging shape during this phase.
