lunar calendar

Months follow phases

A lunar calendar organizes time by the cycles of the moon rather than the sun.

Each month begins with a new moon, making months roughly 29 or 30 days.

Because twelve lunar months fall about eleven days short of a solar year, purely lunar calendars like the Islamic calendar drift through the seasons.

Some calendars, like the Hebrew and Chinese, add periodic extra months to stay aligned with both moon phases and solar seasons.
