waning crescent
Moon nearly gone
A waning crescent is the moon's final phase before a new moon, when only a thin sliver of the illuminated side remains visible, shrinking each night.
The crescent appears on the left side in the Northern Hemisphere, rising in the pre-dawn hours.
The waning crescent hung low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.
