old moon
Nearly vanished crescent
The old moon is the waning crescent phase just before a new moon, when only a thin sliver remains visible.
In folklore and gardening traditions, the old moon is considered a time for endings, pruning, and letting go: Plant root vegetables under an old moon.
The phrase also appears poetically for anything fading or nearly spent.
