Islamic calendar

Muslim year system

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar of twelve months used to determine Muslim holidays and rituals.

Because it lacks the adjustments that keep solar calendars aligned with seasons, Islamic dates drift through the year—Ramadan may fall in summer or winter depending on the decade.

Also called the Hijri calendar, it counts years from Muhammad's migration to Medina in 622 CE.
