genocides

Systematic population annihilations

Genocides is the plural of genocide, the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular ethnic group or nation.

The word was coined in 1944 to describe the Nazi extermination of Jews, but applies to similar atrocities: the genocides in Rwanda and Cambodia, a history of colonial genocides.

Mass killings that target racial, religious, or cultural groups may be called genocides whether state-sponsored or not.
