generalizing

Finding common patterns

Generalizing is drawing broad conclusions from limited examples or applying observations more widely than the evidence strictly supports.

When you generalize, you move from specific instances to larger claims: I'm generalizing here, but most startups fail within five years.

The word often carries a note of caution—speakers acknowledge they're simplifying: I know I'm generalizing, but... .

To generalize can also mean to make something more widely applicable or less specific.
