essential services
Society's basic needs
Essential services are the basic systems and functions a society depends on to maintain public health, safety, and order—utilities like water, electricity, and sewage; emergency response like police, fire, and ambulance; healthcare; and sometimes food supply and transportation.
The term gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, when governments designated certain workers as essential: Grocery store employees were classified as essential services.
The designation often determines which operations continue during emergencies, strikes, or lockdowns.
