gauger

One who measures

A gauger is someone who measures or gauges things—historically, an official who measured the contents of casks for taxation, especially in the liquor trade.

The word now applies more broadly to anyone who operates gauging instruments or assesses quantities: The gauger checked the tank levels before the shipment.

Also spelled gager.
