checker

One who inspects

A checker is someone who examines or verifies something: a fact-checker, a quality checker at a factory.

In American English, a checker is also a cashier at a supermarket.

Checkers are the round playing pieces in the board game of the same name.

The verb means to mark with a pattern of squares or to variegate: a checkered tablecloth, a checkered past.

The pattern itself—alternating squares of two colors—is called checkerboard or simply checkers.
