A bung is a stopper for closing the hole in a barrel or cask: He hammered the bung into place.

The hole itself is a bunghole.

To bung something is to plug it, or more loosely, to throw or shove carelessly: She bunged her keys into her bag.

In British and Australian slang, bunged up means blocked or congested: My nose is completely bunged up.
