cavalry units
Horse-based military forces
Cavalry units are military formations of soldiers who fight from horseback or, in modern usage, from vehicles.
Historically, cavalry provided mobility and shock power on battlefields: The cavalry units flanked the enemy position.
Today the term persists for armored or air-mobile divisions that inherit the cavalry's traditional roles of reconnaissance and rapid deployment.
