military occupation
Foreign troop control
Military occupation is the control and administration of territory by a foreign military force, typically following conquest or the defeat of the territory's government.
The occupying power assumes governmental functions while the original sovereignty remains legally suspended rather than transferred.
International law, particularly the Geneva Conventions, regulates how occupying forces must treat civilians and property.
The military occupation lasted several years after the war ended.
Unlike annexation, occupation is theoretically temporary.
