garrisons

Troops at forts

Garrisons are military troops stationed at a particular location, or the fortified places where they're stationed.

The word works both ways: soldiers garrison a fort, and a fort is garrisoned by soldiers.

The garrison held out for three months.

They garrisoned the border towns against invasion.

By extension, any group posted somewhere to maintain control: a garrison of security guards.
