fifth column
Traitors aiding enemies
A fifth column is a group of people who secretly work to undermine a country or organization from within while pretending loyalty.
The term originated during the Spanish Civil War, when a general claimed four columns of troops were advancing on Madrid while a "fifth column" of supporters inside the city would rise up.
The senator warned of a fifth column working to weaken democratic institutions.
