gaits

Ways of moving

Gaits is the plural of gait, meaning ways of walking or moving on foot.

A person might have an unsteady gait; a horse has four natural gaits—walk, trot, canter, and gallop.

She studied the gaits of the patients to assess their recovery.

The word extends to any characteristic manner of moving: the rolling gaits of sailors long at sea.
