dry-heave

Vomit without vomiting

Dry-heave is to retch without vomiting—the body goes through the convulsive motions of throwing up, but nothing comes out.

It often happens when the stomach is already empty or when nausea isn't quite severe enough to produce vomit: She dry-heaved over the toilet for ten minutes.
